The exhibit opens at the University Art Gallery of Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, and will travel to the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center in Escanaba, Michigan.
The New Fibers exhibitions seek to exhibit contemporary fiber art in a broad range of forms, from textiles rooted in traditional processes and materials, to sculpture, conceptual, and installation art. We particularly invite non-traditional fiber art.
The Fiber Arts Network of Michigan is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the fiber arts and sharing news of fiber arts activities among its members. FAN publishes a quarterly newsletter, sponsors an annual networking meeting with a featured speaker, and organizes these biennial exhibits.
Juror
Patricia Malarcher will jury New Fibers 2008. She is the editor of the Surface Design Journal and is, of course, very knowledgeable about the breadth of current fiber. She makes pieced constructions that are often exhibited in quilt shows, including Quilt National 2005, 2003, 1993, and 1989. Patricia was one of the jurors for Quilt Visions 2006. Awards
FAN plans to present first, second, and third place awards. The top award will be $1000.
Catalog of the exhibit
FAN intends to publish a full-color catalog of the exhibit. Exhibiting artists will receive a complimentary copy of the catalog. Additional copies will be available at a nominal charge.
Eligibility
Participation is open to all artists 18 years and older, living in the United States. Current work (that completed after December 2005) created in all fiber media and/or using fiber techniques is eligible for inclusion. Excepted work cannot have been previously exhibited at the Eastern Michigan University Art Gallery or at the Bonifas Fine Arts Center.
Entry Procedure
An artist may submit up to three works.
Include two slides or high-resolution digital images for each piece (one full view and one detail). Image quality may influence the juror’s decision. Each work should be represented by clearly focused, well-lit images that accurately reflect the work submitted. Your images of accepted work will be reproduced in the catalog and used for publicity.
Slide requirements:
Use 35 mm, 2” x 2” slides in standard plastic or cardboard mounts (no glass mounts). Using a permanent marker (no stick-on labels), identify each slide with the following: Artist’s name, Title of work, Full view or detail, and Indication of the top of the image.
Digital image requirements:
Use a JPG format on a CD disc. Send a 6” x 6” image at least 300 dpi, CMYK color. Label each image with your name, an abbreviated title, and full or detail. For example if Mary Jones is entering her weaving titled Afternoon with a Fawn, she would label the detail image of the work: MJones-Afternoon-detail. Mark the CD with your name.
Entry fee:
The entry fee is $30 for up to three works. Make the check payable to FAN. If you a member of the Fiber Arts Network, the entry fee is discounted to $25. Of course we’d like to encourage you to join FAN, so you’ll be eligible for the discounted rate, if you join at the time of entry. Dues are $25 per year.

Be sure to enclose: Entry form, slides or CD, entry fee, and a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of your slides or CD.
Notification of the juror’s decision will be by email, unless you request otherwise.
Conditions for Accepted Work
Work must be ready to display with any necessary display instructions included. Work must be available for the entire exhibit. FAN reserves the right to re- turn work, which differs significantly from the image presented to the juror. FAN reserves the right to used images of accepted work for publicity, documentation, and educational purposes. Slides and CDs of accepted work will become the property of FAN.
Shipping Accepted Work
The artist is responsible for all shipping and insurance costs to the Eastern Michigan University Art Gallery and from the Bonifas Fine Arts Center. FAN will arrange shipping between the galleries.
Work should be shipped OR hand-delivered in sturdy, reusable containers. COD packages will not be accepted.
Work should arrive at Eastern Michigan University during the period: April 28-30, 2008.
Sales
FAN will promote the exhibit and encourage sales. We intend to publish a full-color catalog. which we believe will encourage sales. FAN will retain a 40% commission on sales from the exhibit.
Insurance
Insurance
Work will be insured by Eastern Michigan University and by Bonifas Fine Arts Center while it is in their possession. Bonifas will insure the work during shipment between the exhibit sites. The artist is responsible for insuring the work during shipment to Eastern Michigan University and while it is being returned to the artist.
Agreement
Submission of work by entry form shall constitute an agreement to comply with all conditions set forth in this prospectus. The juror reserves the right to the final selections of accepted works. The decision of the juror is final. No work may be withdrawn before the conclusion of the traveling exhibition.
Calendar
January 2, 2008: Deadline—postmark entries
March 15, 2008: Notification of juror’s decision by email, unless the artist specifies
surface mail and sends a SASE.
April 28-30, 2008: Accepted work DUE at Eastern Michigan University.
May 6, 2008: New Fibers 2008 opens at Eastern Michigan University Art Gallery in
Ypsilanti, Michigan.
May 9, 2008: New Fibers 2008 opening party. Awards presented.
June 12, 2008: Exhibit closes at Eastern Michigan University.
June 26, 2008: Exhibit opens at Bonifas Fine Arts Center in Escanaba, Michigan.
July 24, 2008: Exhibit closes in Escanaba.
August 1, 2008: Work returned to artist.
